On the Train to Guangzhou

The train moves at the speed

of a clock hand that measures

distance.

One tiny move,

A hundred kilometers away

or nine hundred kilometers closer

to the destination

after which

many more are lined up,

punctually.

An unmoving tunnel inside which

we move in time,

undisturbed and unnoticed,

sure of the place we go to,

until perhaps

an inspector comes, slovenly dressed,

intimidating

among spellbinding faces

and multiplied reflections

on the windowpanes.

We search with trembling hands

the chopped proof

of salvation.
